Lessons of Travel

To the Editor:

We really enjoyed Jeff Wick’s column, Pandemic Road Trip: To Stay or To Go, in last Friday’s paper. It brought back great memories of the years of travels with our three children in our motor home. We stopped at almost every National Park, National Monument and National Historical Site in the Western US and Southern US and read almost all of the information plaques and signs in them as well as the historical markers along the way. And on many of those trips, we had to make changes on the fly as you did, which made the trips even more interesting. These trips were not only enjoyable for all of us and great for bonding, but they were very educational as well.

Our son was not one to bring home books from school to study, and yet he scored in the top 2% in the nation on Social Studies standardized testing due to the things he learned on these trips. I highly encourage such travel to show our youth the beauty and history of this great nation, as well as to interact with and learn some of the customs and challenges of people in other areas of these United States.
