Leash Your Dogs

To the Editor:

As a followup to the two last week’s letters regarding unleashed dogs, I too, am very adamant about people following the rules and having their dogs on leashes when they are out for walks with their owners, and also those that run around the neighborhood without their owners.

I have experienced this in my neighborhood for almost three years now, as there is a resident who never puts his dog on a leash as he walks and allows the dog to go do his potty runs all over other people’s yards. I notified the police many times, but I believe only once was the dog owner given a ticket. Then he leashed the dog for a couple weeks after the ticket, but now it’s back to no leash.

In fact, the police have told me they can’t really do anything unless they see it themselves, even if I have a picture of the dog in my yard or someone else’s. If I have a picture of the same dog that is running loose and it is the same dog at its residence, the police just do not seem very interested in pursuing this. They may talk to the person, and that’s it. So I wonder if they really do ‘have to see it themselves?’ Because this could end up being a very serious issue.

I totally agree with Mr Kasparek in last week’s letter, even what is usually a friendly dog, could be an unpredictable dog. They are animals. How tragic it will be if someone’s dog does cause harm to someone, and how unfortunate it will be for the city of La Grange. This may seem trivial to some, but bodily harm from a dog could be very horrific, sometimes death.

I’m the biggest dog lover there is. Just don’t want someone else’s dog to defecate in my yard or worse yet, attack me or my family. Laws should be followed by all, or tickets given, or the dog picked up.
