Interesting Contrast

To The Editor:

Friday’s paper began with a front-page feature about Arnold Romberg, a prominent citizen well-known for his conservative politics. Mr. Romberg has held leadership positions in the county Republican Party and has held local public office. Regardless of one’s views on politics, Mr. Romberg’s service to the community is obvious to all, even a staunch liberal like me. The article emphasized Mr. Romberg’s education, work-ethic, and “cold logic … tempered with gentle, empathetic intuition.” I appreciated this article and learned some new things about a man with whom I have enjoyed conversations over the years.

Imagine my surprise when I turned to the letters page and found, not one, but two letters excoriating this same fine citizen. One letter was from the current chairwoman of the Fayette County Republican Party. The other was a paid placement from a current candidate for public office. It would seem these two took exception to Mr. Romberg’s cold logic and empathy, not to mention his commitment to service.

But the best part of the whole paper is found in the top right corner of the letters page, where a frequent letter-writer opined that Joe Biden and the Democratic Party have “done nothing but sow more distrust, disdain, and division.” This letter is found on the same page where two prominent local Republicans are criticizing a third prominent local Republican for encouraging citizens literally to roll up their sleeves and save American lives. But it is the Democrats sowing division. Spare me.

Thank you for a highly entertaining edition of the newspaper. I can hardly wait for the next one.
