Inappropriate Commercials
It is absolutely ridiculous and sometimes embarrassing.
My grandchildren were enjoying the movie “White Christmas,” a classic G rated (Appropriate for all ages.) movie. All of a sudden, a provocative commercial comes on and their father has to divert their attention to somewhere/something else.
A person cannot watch a decent movie on television anymore without some intrusive or inappropriate content being flashed before their eyes. You would think that during Christmas, of all seasons, networks would take into consideration how many children watch those good old fashion movies or television shows with their families. But, of course, it is all about money. Companies pay big money to have their product advertised and, in return, they make big money selling their merchandise. Couldn’t the networks filter what is advertised especially during the holiday season or better yet, all year long?
Years ago, commercials were simple. Foul language and provocative scenes were a faux pas. It was called respect, and dignity for the television viewers. Networks and advertisers knew their limits. And, when watching television with a group of people, the improper advertisements can definitely offend and embarrass someone. Have we, as Americans, gotten so used to the provocative innuendoes in television ads that it no longer affects us?
Many people use ad blockers on their computer. It would definitely be wonderful if we could do the same thing with television. I know many people who record their programs and skip over the advertisements. What a great concept. But, for those of us, who continue to watch “live” television, we are at a disadvantage when it comes to those improper advertisements.
What are we to do about this situation? First of all, we can boycott the item that is being advertised. Second of all, we can write to the networks complaining about the advertisements that are being shown. Third, you can complain on Facebook or Twitter. Finally, we can simply no longer watch television as many people I know have done and are happy to have distanced themselves from some of the senseless stuff that is shown.
So, next time one of “those” commercials appear on your television screen, remember you have choices as a consumer and a viewer.
