On the Importance of Czech Heritage Preservation
To the editor:
Growing up in Fayette County, there was much I took for granted. I was surrounded not only by kind, hardworking people, but also by a rich Texas Czech culture and heritage that is truly special to our small corner of the world. I grew up attending polka Masses and dances, visiting the beautiful painted churches painstakingly and lovingly created by Czech and German immigrants, enjoying some of the best kolache and klobasniky anywhere, and listening to stories of “way back when” shared by my grandparents and great-grandmother.
When I moved away for college, I came to realize just how unique and meaningful my upbringing had been. That renewed appreciation for my heritage inspired me to apply to become the Miss Fayette County Czech Slovak Queen for 2024–2025. With the sponsorship and support of the Fayette County Czech Heritage Society, I stepped into this role and was honored to represent Fayette County at the Miss Texas Czech Slovak Queen Pageant in June 2024, where I was awarded the state title.
Through this opportunity, I attended Czech events across Texas, met Texas Czechs from all over the state, deepened my understanding of my heritage, and formed lasting friendships with others who share a passion for preserving our culture. This journey continued when I represented Texas at the Miss Czech Slovak USA Pageant in Wilber, Nebraska, this past August, where I was humbled and honored to win the national title. Over the past several months, I have had the privilege of attending events and educating others about Czech and Slovak heritage across the country, and I am excited to see where the remainder of my reign will take me.
It is remarkable to think that all of this began with being crowned Miss Fayette County Czech Slovak Queen. As a Fayette County native who deeply values our enduring Czech heritage, I strongly believe it is essential that we encourage young people to become involved in preserving and promoting the culture that defines our community. I wholeheartedly encourage any young people of Czech or Slovak descent to consider applying to become a member of our Fayette County Czech Slovak royalty. Titles are available for boys and girls ages 6 to 26, and Fayette County royalty members have the opportunity to compete for Texas titles, with the state queen advancing to the national competition.
We have something truly special here in Fayette County, and it deserves to be shared across Texas and the nation. This program not only allows young people to learn more about their heritage, but also provides invaluable experience as leaders and cultural ambassadors. It is, without question, a life-changing opportunity.
