I’m Not Changing My Values

To the editor:

Character is doing the right thing; even if no one is watching. Sometimes, choosing to do the right thing may put you in the minority; sometimes even standing alone.

I choose to follow the posted speed limit when I drive and most times feel that puts me in the minority of drivers on the road. Minorities know all too well to expect to be bullied.

I refuse to allow bullies to change my choice. No matter how much they tailgate me, I will not allow their aggressive actions to make me speed or drive recklessly.

The same is true for my politics and values. In Fayette County, I am in the minority as a Hispanic and a Democrat. I’ve endured bullying because of both.

I choose not to hide my heritage and opinions, even if they offend the majority. This country was founded on allowing everyone to have a voice; even if they are the minority. Fortunately, I know many Republicans here in Fayette County, some family, who live by the principle of treating others the way you want to be treated; and don’t bully others.

I will not allow bullies to change my character.
