I Love the River And I’m Not a Woke Radical
To the editor:
Let me see if I got this right: 1. The Fayette Power Plant (“FPP”) is the 10th dirtiest power plant in the nation as reported by the FCR some months back which is incredible and not in a good way.
2. FPP wants to dump “more” selenium and industrial waste byproducts into the Colorado River. It is difficult to understand if the “more” FPP refers to means to just continue dumping the same amounts or increase the dumping volume.
3. The hearing for citizens to understand what “more” means or how bad this may be was cancelled by our state representative because, woke Democrats and radical leftist would hijack the meeting. To update an old expression, this makes about as much sense as throwing out the baby with the selenium bath water.
4. I swim, fish, tube, and boat in the Colorado River and I am critically concerned about its water quality. Does this make me a woke radical leftist? My redneck and refrigerator with Bush Light says no. Our politicians don’t seem to realize that it is possible that two seemingly different things can both be true. Even more so, every sport fisher I talked to is also concerned about the water quality and while we are talking about the river, the hydrilla. Hydrilla is not native to Texas but was something else that was stupidly dumped into our rivers and look at what a mess it has made. Those who don’t learn from the past… I don’t appreciate what Austin periodically flushes our way but if we are going to be OK with polluting ourselves and our neighbors downstream without even knowing the details, then that is what is radical crazy. Everyone in Fayette County is involved in agriculture whether by having a farm, ranch, garden, or just by eating and the land is critical for our food. The current drought shows just how critical water is to agriculture. To be good custodians of the land we have to be just as diligent about taking care of water. To me that is not radical woke or a political issue but the common sense your parents gave you growing up. Maybe what is needed is for our politicians to do the same – grow up.
