History Repeats Itself
To The Editor:
In response to Mr. Romberg’s letter, please allow me to respond to him point by point:
1. Who gets to determine what a sane person is? The same people who believe that men can bear children or that a person with male genitalia can become an NCAA champion women’s swimmer? The crazies are in charge and you think that giving them the power to disarm us is going to make us safer? I have two words for that line of thinking – horse manure!
2. The Bill of Rights is just that, a list of our rights. Once you require someone to be licensed to own a gun then it is no longer a right, it then becomes a privilege which can be taken away. Rights aren’t given by the government; they are unalienable meaning we are born with them and there is nothing that can cause them to be removed from us. If you believe that giving up liberty will secure safety, then I have some ocean front property in Arizona that I think you’d be interested in buying.
3. The Second Amendment was not written to protect our rights to hunt, go sport shooting or to even keep us safe from criminals; those are just the added benefits. It was written specifically to keep us free from a government that grows too big for the britches it was given to wear. Giving that same government the power to decide who can and can’t own a gun will only have dire consequences. As we remember D-Day this week, it shouldn’t be too difficult for us to remember why we don’t allow our government to disarm its citizens.
4. No amount of legislation will prevent evil from existing, if anything the opposite is true as laws create criminals so more laws inherently create more criminals. Murder has been illegal since Moses came down from Mount Sinai and has existed for millennia in its various forms. Blaming the weapon for what is wrong in the hearts and minds of men is reactionary and as history has shown, will only lead to larger problems. Instead, we should be proactive by staying armed, staying vigilant and staying free!
