Forum Impressions

To The Editor:

I attended a political forum at Sengelman’s in Schulenburg, the first in a series allowing voters a dialogue with county candidates for office in 2022 elections. This assembly was moderated by Retired Air Force Fighter Pilot Dennis Geesaman of Flatonia.

The headline event was the first formal introduction of four candidates for County Judge.

The forum’s opening focused on the local Commissioner’s race and was a reminder of how the Commissioner’s Court, led by the County Judge is an essential part of local government. We often forget how great an impact is rendered by our County law enforcement, emergency personnel and department officers for our benefit and protection. They keep threats at a distance.

I am reminded of a question once asked of a religious leader, “Rabbai, is there a blessing for the Czar?” The teacher replied, “Yes, there is. ‘May the Lord bless and keep the Czar, far away from us’. Our county officials do us service by protecting us from unwanted outside influences. I love America, am enthusiastic about Texas, but Lord, let me and my family be safe and at peace here in Fayette County.

Last Saturday’s forum allowed an effective appraisal of four outstanding citizens committing time and talent to serve this county. These four have served in diverse roles including town mayor, a surveying business operator, radio personality and firefighter.

Our County Judge candidates represent both a younger generation which has gained skill as well as those with the wisdom of advanced years. In selecting a County executive, I favor a person whose days are matched with vigor, someone who begins the office with the ability to learn tasks, gain insight and plan a sound direction for today’s challenges. I also seek someone who can serve multiple terms, perhaps 8 years or more ... the wisdom of advanced years.

Attend the remaining forums and learn about these candidates. I encourage support of those whose replies to questions carefully consider current times and local concerns while asserting creativity in guiding our County into the changes we will certainly face.
