A Failure of Leadership: The Trump Administrations

To the editor:

President Donald J. Trump’s two administrations stand as a historic failure of leadership in the United States. Across both terms, failures in honesty, competence, and respect for democratic principles have eroded public trust, weakened vital institutions, and tarnished America’s moral standing in the world.

Corruption and abuse of power have defined Trump’s presidency from the beginning. He refused to separate his business interests from public office, creating unprecedented conflicts of interest. His first impeachment exposed his attempt to pressure Ukraine’s president to investigate political rival Joe Biden—an effort to manipulate a foreign power for personal political gain. After losing the 2020 election, Trump refused to accept defeat, spreading lies about election fraud and inciting an armed mob to attack the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn lawful results. That assault, which left blood on the floors of our nation’s Capitol, led to his second impeachment— for incitement of insurrection.

In his second administration, beginning in 2025, accountability has collapsed even further. Inspectors general have been dismissed, oversight has been silenced, and loyalty to Trump has replaced loyalty to the law. His hostility toward expert advice—so evident during the COVID-19 pandemic— has returned with disastrous results. The first Trump administration’s neglect of science and public health cost thousands of American lives and crippled the economy. His second term continues this pattern, marked by chaotic tariff policies, reckless deregulation, and economic instability that burden working families while benefiting the powerful few.

Trump’s record on individual rights and human dignity is equally disturbing. His administrations have perpetuated cruel immigration practices—family separations, indefinite detentions, and medical neglect— condemned by courts and human rights organizations. These policies have inflicted lasting harm on children and families, violating the very values America claims to defend.

At home, Trump’s relentless attacks on judges, journalists, scientists, and election officials have torn at the fabric of democracy. By branding independent institutions as corrupt or “enemies of the people,” he has normalized threats, violence, and distrust. Even after the Capitol riot, he continues to inflame division, vilify opponents, and undermine the very idea of truth. A democracy cannot survive when its leader encourages citizens to doubt elections, courts, and the rule of law.

Internationally, Trump’s reckless approach has weakened long-standing alliances, questioned commitments to NATO, and alienated democratic partners while praising autocrats. His punitive policies toward Venezuela deepened humanitarian suffering and further eroded U.S. credibility abroad.

Taken together, Trump’s two administrations represent a sustained assault on democratic norms, public decency, and moral leadership.

The 2026 elections are not about Republicans versus Democrats—they are about whether our republic survives. Voters must choose representatives who honor their oath to the Constitution, not personal loyalty to one man.

This is a moment for courage. Our leaders must defend the rule of law, protect freedom of the press and peaceful assembly, and restore accountability to government. The future of American democracy depends on it.
