Election Workers Do a Fantastic Job
To the Editor:
In her letter last week, “Republicans Saved the Day,” Deborah Frank called me out (the Democratic Party Chair) for not acknowledging the Republican’s participation in the May 14 Runoff election. I was not contacted by the FCR to provide information for an article about the election. Early on, I sent an email to a known diehard Republican who had signed up to be a poll judge to personally thank him. His response was that voting is the foundation of our democracy and that he wanted to do his part to support it. At the election judges training I announced, “I want to thank the Republicans for stepping up to help out with this election,” which was followed by a round of applause from the Democratic members present.
Truthfully, I don’t know how many of the election judges affiliate with the Republican party. Election workers, be it Democrat, Republican or non-declared, must present a nonpartisan face while working at the polls. I only get to see some of the poll workers at election time, so I don’t know their political affiliation, if any. In Fayette County, all the election workers do a fantastic job at putting political differences aside to serve our voters. For example, Ms. Frank and I worked side-byside at the central count station during the March Primary. There was an inspector from the Texas Secretary of State’s office observing us. The inspector’s official report referred to Ms. Frank as the “Democratic Party leader”.
