Don’t Ban, Include

I grew up on a farm near a small town. I went to school in that small town through 12th grade. All through my childhood and teenage years I read library books.

Oh, the adventures I had. Traveling on their pages to foreign lands, experiencing lives that were so different, and learning that the hopes and dreams of the people who lived those lives were similar to mine. I was immersed in real life experiences that challenged my mind. These books helped prepare me for college and the working world. A country girl from a small town became an educated, open-minded, successful citizen. With access to a variety of books, our students can experience this journey, too, even if they never travel far.

Banning books, policing libraries, threatening to close libraries is a horror I never imagined could be happening today. I agree with Mr. McCord (Letter to the FCR, April 24) that SB13 and HB900 should not be passed and that a book committee should be dissolved. Let’s act. Contact your Senators and Representatives. Don’t stifle knowledge.
