Did Democracy Win?

To The Editor:

I am writing this before I know the results of the midterm elections which were held on Tuesday, Nov. 8. I do know that Democracy is on the ballot.

I am disgusted and saddened by the attack ads that promote blatant lies and allude to violence. I am disgusted that lies and violence have been normalized. I am saddened and disgusted that some folks have laughed and applauded the violence. I am disgusted that elected officials who could have condemned the violence chose not to. I am disgusted by the insidious, vile rhetoric that some candidates spewed.

I am saddened that the values our nation has always stood for are threatened by this assault on Democracy. We are a nation that has stood up for voting rights, has been proud of the peaceful transfer of power, has championed and supported other countries who desire to be free and live in peace.

If Democracy loses, we must not ignore what is happening. We will continue the fight for a nation that our forefathers envisioned- a nation that is diverse, open-minded, supports equal rights for all cultures, compassionate and welcoming, always working toward a perfect union. I pray Democracy wins.
