Data Centers Won’t Help Us
To the editor:
The vote that the county commissioners took back in March passed a resolution opposing data centers. This vote did not give the county government any authority to regulate data centers. But, these same commissioners do have the power of the purse in the form of tax abatements, aka tax breaks. Without tax breaks these data centers will probably be built elsewhere or maybe not at all.
If the commissioners feel so strongly about these data centers then are they willing to not give these data centers the tax abatements needed so they will be built? Do we really need a data center in our backyard? The answer is probably no since it really will not provide the citizens of Fayette County with anything beneficial.
The servers that make up the data centers have a limited life.As they need to be replaced what will they do with the obsolete servers? At some point these data centers will become white elephants that will have to be upgraded or abandoned. Who’s to say what will become of them except do we really see them improving our lives or just a few who profit from their construction?
