Correcting Errors About Dubina

In the January/February edition of Texas Parks & Wildlife, there was an article about Dubina and the Dubina church. I would like to make a few corrections to this article.

In the article, it was stated that the Piano Bridge was originally built in 1885 using piano wire for suspension. Really, piano wire? They must have had much larger pianos in the 1880s!

The article goes on to say, “Our ancestors wanted their churches to look like those in their homeland of Poland, Belgium, and Italy.”

Really? That’s news to the people who live in Dubina. We always thought our ancestor’s homeland was Czech Moravia. After all, the Texas State Historical Society designated Dubina as the first CZECH settlement in Texas.

The article also states that in the 1980’s a professional artist came in and restored the church. Once again, that is news to all of us local parishioners in Dubina who restored the church ourselves.

The sad thing is that most people will read this and take it for its face value. I wonder where they came up with this stuff. I guess they didn’t have access to the internet.
