Boredom During the Pandemic
I heard someone say the other day, “I’m bored.” I wonder how many of us can relate to that statement.
It isn’t easy constantly staying at home during this pandemic. Personally, I miss visiting with people or attending social events or going out to eat. Many of us just don’t want to take the chance of becoming ill. A person can only watch so much television and then it all becomes so mundane. And, how many times have we seen Jake from State Farm? Now, talk is that the college football season may not happen. WHAT? That is many people’s lifeline during the fall of the year. I can’t imagine not having college football during the fall of year. It will not feel right. I may have to watch football reruns.
If you have noticed that the craft department in some of the stores are empty. I had the nerve to ask why the shelves are so empty? The salesperson told me that many people, since staying at home, are doing more and more crafts. There wasn’t a single sewing machine for sale. You have to admit, craft projects are satisfying and fun to do especially with young children. There’s so many to choose from too; jewelry making, quilting, scrapbooking, knitting, cross-stitching, painting, woodworking, etc.
Being bored during this pandemic/crisis in America, is something I have tried to avoid but it hasn’t been easy. I have learned that keeping up with daily chores and routines is vital in keeping my sanity. Many of us, though, are looking for things to do. Naturally, the internet suggests countless things to keep the mind and body active.
Of course, there is always yard work. I tend to be moving the sprinkler around from one place to another these days. And, why do weeds grow faster than flowers?
It seems to me, I either sweep the garage or clean out the inside of my car once a week. It never ends. Where does all the dust and dirt come from? I figured spraying the inside of my car with Lysol was the way to go during this pandemic. I continue to remind myself to clean and sanitize.
I have a friend who has kept a scrapbook on the Coronavirus pandemic ever since it started. She writes down numbers as she hears them on the news, cuts out articles from the newspaper concerning the pandemic and has even taken pictures during the lockdown.
Pinterest has more ideas than a person can imagine. Recipes, crafts, fashion, makeup tricks, home decorating, gardening tips, etc.
Exercising. I see neighbors walking past my house each and every morning and evening. It’s good to see them and exchange greetings through a wave or a smile.
Puzzles. I have seen people who have put together huge puzzles that look like a work of art after they are finished.
Our own library offers many books to read and they are free.
I know many people who have gotten bird feeders and fountains and have taken up bird watching. It’s rewarding to see 2 or 3 pairs of red birds flying to and from the feeder. It’s almost hummingbird season so it is time to purchase those hummingbird feeders or clean the ones you already own.
The list goes on and on but one thing’s for sure, we have to find our own way of getting through this pandemic. This may continue for a while but there’s one thing for sure, Americans are strong. We have proven ourselves so far and we will continue to prove ourselves to each other and to the rest of the world. We can and will get through this!
