Bockhorn-Rodenbeck Reunion Postponed Until July 18, 2021
With continued concerns over maintaining proper social distancing and observing current regulations in force to protect the health and safety of family members, the 83rd meeting of the Bockhorn-Rodenbeck Family Reunion scheduled for Sunday, July 19 has been postponed until 2021. The new date is Sunday, July 18, 2021, the third Sunday of the month as has been the tradition since the 1940s.
The Bockhorn-Rodenbeck Family Reunion was first held on Thursday, Aug. 16, 1934 and remains one of the county’s largest annual family gatherings. With the exception of the years 1942 to 1945 during World War II, the reunion has been held each year. The postponement of the 83rd edition comes after the Reunion Executive Committee weighed the various hazards and complications resulting from the COVID-19 Virus.
Reunion President Bruce Bockhorn stated, “Due to the COVID-19 virus the Executive Committee recently evaluated the risk to our attendees and our caterers. After further consideration of the evolving situation regarding public events, we decided that we should postpone this meeting. With approximately 45% of our attendees being over 65 years of age and in a high-risk category, it made no sense to jeopardize their health or that of any attendee. Additionally, due to the new rules on public gatherings we could not adequately plan to social distance in the hall where the reunion is typically held. We hope our members understand the rationale behind this very difficult decision and will look forward to meeting next year.”
Dr. Bockhorn requested that family members pay attention to future mailings plus newspaper and radio announcements for updates regarding the 83rd Bockhorn-Rodenbeck Family Reunion. All family data regarding births, deaths, marriages and other information since the 82nd Reunion in July 2019 will be recorded and presented next year for recognition.
