Bluff Change Needed
To the Editor:
As we have all seen and heard of commercial traffic experiencing accidents coming down the Bluff on Hwy 77. Senate Bill 1053 was created to help deal with this situation unfortunately this bill failed to pass or come up for a vote.
It’s interesting to see that representatives from the trucking industry were on hand to help derail this bill, which is desperately needed. I have heard from time to time that the La Grange Police Department was on hand to help deal with situations on the Bluff that required their assistance. In some cases the La Grange Fire Department was also called. Is the Bluff outside city limits? You probably cannot have the entire Sheriff’s department descend on a single incident on the Bluff.
If one really wants to get something done about heavy commercial traffic on and off the Bluff the City of La Grange needs to turn a blind eye to the problem and not respond to incidents on the Bluff. If it’s a State Highway then you let the State handle the problem. As for the trucking industry you can always bill them for time and equipment utilised. If you want to hit back then if they keep saying it’s a State Highway then let the state deal with the problem. When they realize that it costs them money to respond they will fix the problem.
