Backwards Progress

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

I’ve been a member of the Do Your Duty Club (DYD) for 49 Years.

I am sad and ashamed of the Town of Round Top to terminate our Square Fair. We have had this event twice a year since the 1980s. The DYD kept the Town Square and Town Hall in great shape and paid for everything that needed fixing up. Our money made from the Square Fair helped the Town of Round Top when they were short of money. We gave half of our proceeds from each Fair to the Town to help with repairs.

Many people of the Town and surrounding area looked forward to the Square Fair every time we had it to either shop or visit with their friends. I’m disappointed that the Town has stopped the only fundraiser that we have. We give back to the community with the money that we raise. Every organization profits from this event.

Now I understand that the Town of Round Top wants to charge for the use of the Town Hall and we would have to pay a fee for our meeting of the DYD. This is unacceptable for something that we worked for during our 90 years of service. It’s a sad time for the DYD.

Now the Town of Round Top is focusing on the Historical Society to try to manage their 90 year lease. Sometimes progress is not going forward.
