Answers from A Biden Voter
To the Editor:
A letter-writer in last week’s edition of The Fayette County Record asked several questions of people who voted for President Joe Biden. Since I am such a voter, I thought I would offer a few answers and other observations. Of course, I am not a spokesman for all Biden voters; my answers are my own. Democrats allow for a diversity of opinions and perspectives, so my comments should not be interpreted as speaking for everyone.
“Does it concern those who voted for Biden that he shows up at a ‘virtual meeting’ with world leaders while sitting in a gloomy basement empty of the American flag?” My answer is a resounding “no.” I am not impressed with symbols of patriotism. My president does not need to molest an American flag on a stage to show his patriotism. I am much more concerned with how our President comports himself in official settings. Our President conducts himself with the dignity expected of his lofty office and does not lower himself into the sewer with insults of nearly everyone who displeases him at any particular moment. Most importantly, our President did not, and will not, incite an insurrection that led to deaths and serious injuries at the Capitol.
“Does it bother those who voted for Biden that he never closes a … speech with ‘God Bless America’?” Again, I am not swayed by outward displays of patriotism. I am far more concerned with actual action. I am far more concerned with the fact that our President has delivered nearly 200 million COVID-19 vaccines to the waiting arms of Americans. I am far more impressed that our President models the behavior he would like to see from all of us – wearing a facemask when required. Besides, the claim in the question is not even accurate. Unless the letter-writer is meaning that Biden should actually sing the song God Bless America, I have heard him invoke God’s blessings on many occasions.
I am also not bothered that Biden himself has not visited the southern border region. One thing that distinguishes Biden from his predecessor is that he appoints qualified, competent people to handle the many issues facing our country. Those experts then report back to the President. Often, the arrival of the President to the scene of a crisis can further exacerbate the problems facing local officials. That is not to say that the President should never visit the scene of a crisis. Our President is not as concerned with photo opportunities as he is with actual leadership and governance.
The rest of last week’s letter was devoid of both questions and statements of fact. I did find one claim “laugh-out-loud” humorous, however. “Had Trump been reelected…, the riots and destruction of businesses around the country [would not have happened].” I assume that this is a reference to the many demonstrations following the murder of George Floyd. I have a question: Who was the president last summer?
