Amazing Kubicek Legacy

To the Editor:

The Kubicek name has been synonymous with the Smithville Post Office for almost 73 years. On September 30th that amazing legacy will come to end, when Ed retires. Ed has been with USPS for almost 40 years and his dad Chester for 33 years.

Ed joined the postal service first as a carrier and later transferred to a clerks position. The stories are too numerous to write here but when I asked Ed what one of the biggest changes was he told me that he remembers when his dad had to get the mail off the train and take it back to the office to be sorted and distributed to the carriers and delivered to the post office boxes. Well Ed doesn’t have to get the mail from the train but he still distributes the mail to the carriers and faithfully gets the mail into the mailboxes at the office all while taking care of his customers at the window, greeting most of them by name and more often than not sharing a laugh or two.

I asked the staff what they will miss the most and although I heard some great stories the common answer was, his friendly smile, willingness to help and funny stories. When I asked Ed what he would miss the most he was quick to answer, “my customers, and the people I work with.” Well I know I can speak for all of the staff and say that we are going to miss him like crazy, as I’m sure many of you will as well. So, if you stopped by the office before Sept. 30, you got to see him before he left.

Please join us for a celebration of Ed’s career and of course his retirement from the Post Office at Pockets Grill on Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.

Be sure to bring a story or two because I know he will.
