Summer Bridge to Provide Practical Tools To Help Students and Recent Graduates Heading to College be More Successful

This summer, ACCSS and BRIDGE will be partnering to provide two opportunities for area students to participate in a Summer Bridge educational program. There will be a Summer Bridge event offered July 23-25 at Columbus High School and a second event will be held July 29-31 at Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus. These events will run from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and will be provided at no charge to attendees. Lunch will be provided and there is an option for transportation to be provided if requested in advance. Topics to be covered include time management, study skills, literacy skills, mental health and more. Students who recently completed 8th through 12th grades are encouraged to attend. Pre-registration is required.

Join Arts for Rural Texas (ARTS) for two engaging artist talks with Christy Crews Dunn and Erin Urban. The mother-daughter duo of “Natural Expressions” will share their insights and answer questions. The talks will be held on Saturday, July 20 at 2 p.m. at the ARTS Ross Gallery (114 N. Live Oak St., Fayetteville, TX). This event open to the public and free to attend.

Winchester Area Civic Association Seeks Nominees for Community Service Award

The Winchester Area Civic Association is announcing a new award to be presented to an individual, group, organization or business who has made a significant contribution in furthering the WACA work of community service. Nominees are to be residents of the greater Winchester area or if a business, their business area must include Winchester. Only current members of WACA may make a nomination through a written resume of the nominee’s contribution. Applications must be submitted by Nov. 1 to the current WACA secretary. The award will be presented at the annual WACAChristmas party. More information will be forthcoming in future columns.

NRA Foundation Awards Grants to FCSO

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek announced that the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a grant from the NRA Foundation and Friends of NRA in the amount of $3,504. The money received from the grant was used to fund the purchase of a plate target, as well as service ammunition to be used for enhanced firearms training for Sheriff’s Deputies, Reserve Deputies and Corrections Personnel. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has been receiving grants from Friends of NRA for many years now.

Noah Hester, of Fayetteville, was among the 1,247 graduates who received their degrees and/or certificates from Shenandoah University during the 2023-24 academic year. Hester earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance.

In the heart of Fayette County, Meals on Wheels Rural Capital Area (MOWRCA) continues its decades-long service to make a significant difference in the lives of seniors through its dedicated and tireless efforts. This year alone, the program has served 12,529 meals to county seniors in Carmine, Fayetteville, Flatonia, La Grange, and Schulenburg.
