In Memory Bertram Dodson Garrett, MD, FAAFP July 3, 1947-January 28, 2026

Bert Garrett was born and raised in El Paso by his loving parents, Henry Dodson Garrett, MD, and Rebecca Turner Garrett. Dr. Garrett was a third-generation physician. He attended Austin High School in El Paso, MIT, the University of Texas at Austin, UT Health Science Center San Antonio for medical school, and UT Health Science Center Houston for his residency in family medicine.

Over 40-plus years, Dr. Garrett practiced office, hospital, emergency, surgical, obstetrical, and pediatric medicine. He spent over 20 of those years practicing what he called “real medicine” in La Grange, cherishing the relationships he formed.

Later, he transitioned into academic medicine, completing a fellowship in faculty development at the University of Washington. He served as the program director at the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency in Las Cruces for 10 years. Teaching the art of healing to future family physicians, he felt, was his legacy.

Bert had a full and successful life, loved and respected by many. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 35 years, Judith Garrett; sons Sam Garrett, Joel Garrett, and Max Garrett; grandson Alex Garrett (son of Sam); granddaughter Magnolia Garrett (daughter of Joel); and sister Cindy Garrett Milazzo and her husband, Marco Milazzo. Bert often said, “He who dies with the most stories wins.” Bert was a winner.
