We Don’t Need to be First

To the editor:

There has been considerable discussion about data centers and the need to slow down their proliferation. There seems to be some discussion about moratoriums on these centers to outright banning them.

I for one would like to know is why do we need so many and what will they do for us. All I have seen so far is an annoyance when on the internet. It seems that it always there to help you even if you can handle whatever it is you are doing by yourself. It doesn’t know what I am looking for on Amazon or does it really know what I am writing about.

The quickest way to slow down the building of these data centers is to stop the socalled tax abatements, aka tax breaks, for these centers. If you can’t build one without a tax exemption maybe you shouldn’t build it at all. I don’t get a tax break for an agricultural exemption for five years so why are the data centers getting theirs so quickly?

All I see about AI Data Centers is no different than the space race back in the 1960s against Russia. Now we have a race against China in building and rolling out AI Data Centers. We don’t have to be number one in AI Data Centers or the first to build a moon base.
