Origins of Morality

To the editor:

The concluding paragraph of another one of those voluminous editorials states: “The Bible is not the historical origin of morality. Certain biblical commands require human judgement to interpret in the context of modern culture and understandings. Concepts of what is decent and acceptable behavior evolve along with culture and civilization.”

Of course, it is true that “the Bible is not the historical origin of morality.” Morality is created by God, and God certainly predates the Bible. God put the knowledge of Him in our hearts. The Bible tells us of some of the people who had a relationship with God long before the Bible. Noah, Abraham, Moses, and others are examples.

Paul writes in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what was made, so that they are without excuse.”

God created us and loves us. He wants us to have fellowship with Him while we are on this earth. He wants us to be with Him for eternity in heaven.

God alone from the beginning, now, and always is the determiner of what is moral. To suggest that society determines what is moral is to put man (the created) above God (the Creator.)
