Two weeks into the season and the Flatonia football team had already surpassed its win total from last season. The Bulldogs (who went 1-9 last year), improved to 2-0 this season with a 27-0 victory at Hallettsville Sacred Heart Friday.

The Columbus Cardinals look like a defending state champ good enough to repeat. The Cardinals came to La Grange and overwhelmed the Leps Friday 49-7 in front of a a big crowd that turned out for the home opener.

The Flatonia volleyball team defeated Hallettsville in five sets Tuesday 18-25, 25-17, 25-17, 21-25, 27-15. Flatonia stat leaders were: Aces: Summer Sodek - 3, Kat Sullivan - 2, Abbie Uzzell - 2, Eliana Herrera - 1; Assists: Summer Sodek - 24, Abbie Uzzell - 5, Brynlee Zimmerman - 3, Digs: Kat Sullivan - 12, Brynlee Zimmerman - 12, Emma Kosler - 10, Summer Sodek - 9, Abbie Uzzell - 9 Kills: Kat Sullivan - 14, Emma Kosler - 12, Abbie Uzzell - 6.

Of Note: The two new coaches of these teams had impressive debuts last week, but one will loss their first games at their new jobs this week. Rogers is coming off a 38-21 victory over Groesbeck in their season opener under nee head coach Casey Carr ... Meanwhile, Schulenburg looked very impressive in Clay Ferguson’s first game as head coach at Schulenburg as the Shorthorns spanked Hallettsville Sacred Heart 42-0. New ‘Horns starting QB Owen Brenek ran 91 yards and threw for 134 yards. The Schulenburg defense limited Sacred Heart to just 34 total yards.

At Thursday’s Schulenburg CC Meet held at the City of Schulenburg Sports Complex Lady Horn Ellie Hammack finished in 6th place in the varsity girls division. Bo Brossman and Demarion Glass medaled in the JV Boys division. The varsity boys finished 4th as a team led by Adam Schramek (26th individually), and the JV Boys finished 3rd as a team. The Horns and Lady Horns were set to travel to Shiner’s Greens Dickison Park this Thursday.
