Dionie Tolman Memorial Golf Tournament Set for Oct. 15

When Dionie Tolman was first diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2009, her husband Randy thought it might be a good idea to hold a golf tournament to help defray some of the medical expenses. “Oak Meadows Church in Houston (the church that we had been part of) held one earlier and it was quite successful,” said Tolman, “so why wouldn’t one for my sickly wife be successful, too?” He had participated in their golf tournaments. It was fun and they had barbecue and big prizes. So, when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, there were four men who had participated in other tournaments and he asked them if it would be a good idea. Everyone from the church was excited and wanted to participate.

“We moved to Camp Lost Pines in 2013,” said the minister. “I no longer had the support system that I had in Houston, so I did not continue the tournaments after arriving in Warda.”

After she passed away in 2021, he thought it would be a good idea to honor her and support the causes she cared about.

His daughter, Denise Haverda, helped him plan the event and facilitate activities. Several family members, church members, and friends of the family participated as well. The first “Dionie Tolman Memorial Golf Tournament” was held at the Giddings Municipal Golf Course in October, 2021, with proceeds going to Hospice Brazos Valley and Metastatic Breast Cancer research. It was so successful that Tolman decided to hold a second tournament in 2022. That will also take place at the Giddings Municipal Golf Course on October 15, 2022. This year’s income will be split between Hospice Brazos Valley and Camp Lost Pines in Warda.

Although the 74-year-old Tolman has married again, he is planning this golf tournament with the help of his new wife, 71-year-old author Elizabeth Dettling Moreno. For more information about the tournament, call Tolman at 832-830-5337 or email rightway1999@sbcglobal. net .
