Senior Connections Bringing Joy and Wellness to Local Seniors
Senior Connections, located in Schulenburg, is a vibrant activity center dedicated to enriching the lives of seniors 55 and up, offering free membership to people from Fayette, Colorado, and Lavaca counties. With satellite locations in Flatonia and Weimar, this organization is committed to providing meaningful experiences, fostering friendships, and supporting the health and well-being of older adults across the region.
The main Senior Connections center sits in the heart of Schulenburg, welcoming seniors from the surrounding area. Recognizing the need for accessibility, the center also operates satellite facilities in Flatonia and Weimar. This network ensures that seniors in Fayette, Colorado, and Lavaca counties have convenient access to a safe, welcoming space where they can connect with others and engage in enriching activities.
Supporting our seniors and elderly neighbors is vital for building a strong, compassionate community. Senior Connections focuses on the social, mental, and physical benefits of active engagement. By offering a place where seniors can socialize, stay mentally sharp, and nourish their bodies, the center helps combat isolation and promotes overall well-being. These efforts remind us that every senior deserves respect, care, and opportunities to thrive.
At Senior Connections, seniors enjoy a variety of activities designed to stimulate their minds and spirits. Daily gatherings offer opportunities to socialize and make new friends. Brain-stimulating games—such as dominoes, puzzles, tarok and other card games, and Scrabble—help keep minds sharp and encourage friendly competition. A highlight for many participants is the healthy, homecooked meals served each day, which nourish both body and soul. Lunch and Learn programs provide educational opportunities and chances to meet local business owners.
One of the most popular events at Senior Connections is bingo. More than just a fun game, bingo gives seniors a chance to win useful prizes that help them stretch their budgets. Winners receive items such as snacks, cleaning supplies, personal care items, and paper goods. These prizes make everyday life a little easier and more affordable. This practical approach adds extra value to the activities, showing how the center truly looks out for its members.
Senior Connections is open from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at all locations. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays; on Wednesdays, we start a little earlier at 11:20 a.m. because it’s our busiest day. You will want to get there early, regardless, so you can serve yourself a drink and find a seat as we hear the announcements and do the Pledge of Allegiance, prayer concerns, and the blessing before we line up.
Here’s a look at the upcoming schedule for the week of June 22-26.
Join us June 22 in Schulenburg at 1111 Bohlmann Ave. Today’s menu is hamburger steak, gravy, and grilled onions from Koopmann Catering; buttered potatoes, a salad, and garlic bread will be prepared by the volunteers. Members Alice Fajkus and Johnny Fatjik will bring the desserts.
The Lunch and Learn program, which follows the meal, will feature Gary McKee, who will talk about Schulenburg musicians throughout its history. He encourages you to bring pictures of musicians and dance halls. That’s sure to bring back wonderful memories. Following his program, Amedisys Hospice will join us for the bingo game.
On June 23, we will be located at the Flatonia Methodist Church Newman Hall. Menu for the day includes one of our members’favorites. They loveAmanda’s meatloaf, which will be paired with buttered noodles and our famous salad. Helen Steinhauser will bring desserts. At 12 p.m., the Lunch and Learn presenter will be Pam from Hometown Wellness, and she’ll be talking about good and bad sugars, sugar substitutes, and dementia prevention, since this is Alzheimer’s prevention month. At 12:30 p.m., Flatonia Health Center will be in the house to call Bingo.
We are back in Schulenburg on Wednesday, June 24, which is always one of our busiest days of the week, and today’s catered meal from Oakridge Smokehouse is going to draw a crowd. We will have their fried catfish, hush puppies, coleslaw, and macaroni and cheese. Member Darlene Williams will bring desserts. Jessica Cernosek with Schulenburg Family Fitness will call the bingo game.
Artful Friday continues on June 26 at the Senior Connections Center in Schulenburg. Today is the last day of the month-long workshops that Jaime Janda has been teaching, painting without paint brushes, and Sheryl Tumis’s crochet class. Next month, we look forward to Claire Lewis teaching watercolor classes. This class is full with a long waitlist. It’s a very popular class, and a new instructor artist on our team is Bonny Karstedt, who will be teaching needle felting. At the time of writing this article, there were two spaces left. You must register in advance for these classes, so if you are interested, call the center at (979) 743-3227 to see if there is still space available. And if you are signed up for any of these courses and cannot attend, please let us know so we can call someone from the waitlist.
