Local Radio Station Holds Camp for Kids
Fayette Country’s only community radio station, KTIM, held its inaugural summer radio camp on June 8-12. For three hours each afternoon, campers learned what’s involved in the day-to-day operations of the station as well as the different programming K-TIMe provides including video streaming. The participants also wrote and recorded community billboard spots. They learned how to edit their recordings and add background music.
KTIM volunteer, Doug Elliott, walked the campers through his process for creating his weekly show, The Doug House. He then worked with them to record and edit their audio for a show featuring the music of the Beatles. It will air on 89.1 KTIM, on Monday, June 29, at 5 p.m. and replay on Friday, July 3 at 4 p.m.
Eddie Oppermann (Eddie O.) interviewed the participants on the Thursday of camp. Then on Friday, the campers “took over” the station to host their own brief shows.
In addition to Doug, many others from the KTIM crew stopped by to share their experiences at the station. They included Nuulani Atkins, Reece Nygren, Erica Menconi, Lyndsey Vasek, Lee Fritsch, and Becky Snyder. Executive Director of the station, Caleb Chowdory was also there to share much of the behind the scene workings of the station. Caleb said, “The camp was great, and the station enjoyed partnering with ARTs. It was nice having their support this first year.”
On the final day, campers shared feedback to help make next year’s camp even better. Overall, their comments were positive, and their suggested improvements make sense. KTIMe looks forward to making this an annual offering.
