Fayetteville Takes Proactive Steps to Reduce Mosquito Populations
Effective immediately, the City of Fayetteville is launching a community-wide mosquito control effort to reduce mosquito populations and protect public health throughout our town. This initiative will continue throughout the warm weather months.
Residents will receive advance notice and regular updates regarding application schedules and affected areas. Every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience and maintain safe access while city crews access public drainage systems, easements and right-of-way’s to place treatments.
The City will use BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) mosquito dunks—a naturally occurring bacterium that targets mosquito larvae without harming people, pets, fish, bees or fireflies. BTI is a safe, targeted and environmentally friendly approach for controlling mosquito larvae in standing water, making it one of the most effective and environmentally responsible tools for community mosquito control.
The BTI mosquito dunks will be placed in public standing- water areas such as drainage ditches, retention ponds and other locations where mosquitos commonly breed. Residents can also help by eliminating standing water in containers, buckets, birdbaths or anything that holds water for more than three days.
