As part of Fayette Electric Cooperative’s commitment to education, the cooperative will award six $1,500 scholarships to area high school seniors whose parents or guardians are members of the cooperative and reside in Fayette Electric’s service area.

The purpose of WACA is to promote the Winchester area, produce a forum for discussion of local events and ideas relevant to the Winchester community, and to produce cost free, family-friendly community events. It is also the association’s responsibility for the cost of maintaining Zilss Hall. This past year with COVID-19 most events, such as the annual domino tournament, hall rentals and quilt block painting classes have been cancelled. Three of our largest funding streams have been canceled. Therefore, your membership is important.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Fayette, Washington, Austin and Colorado Counties are conducting an urban and homeowner soil testing campaign Jan. 25-Feb. 26. All plants need adequate amounts of nutrients to grow and flourish. Some plants have different soil requirements, for example, are you trying to produce vibrant flowers, an immaculate turf for yard of the month, or to grow the best produce in the county? A soil test can narrow down what is available to the plants you grow in order to make balanced fertilizer applications that will help them thrive.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Wednesday, Feb. 3 the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Canine Unit, Sgt. Randy Thumann and K9 partner Kolt, stopped a Volkswagen SUV on Interstate 10 at the 673 mile-marker at approximately 2:13 p.m. for a traffic violation. After speaking to the driver Thumann became suspicious that the vehicle was involved in transporting illegal narcotics. Thumann was given consent to search the vehicle. Thumann deployed his canine Kolt to conduct an exterior sweep of the vehicle. Thumann observed Kolt alerted to the interior of the vehicle for the presence of illegal narcotics. A search of the vehicle revealed 10 ink toners cartridges for laser printers, new in the box, each loaded with methamphetamine instead of ink. Approximately 58 pounds of meth was discover with an estimated street value of $2.7 million dollars. The driver Alvaro Barrera, 49 of Laredo, was arrested for felony drug possession and taken to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.

KJZT Family Life is a Fraternal Benefit Society that has been serving Texans since 1894. To show appreciation for Catholic Schools, the KJZT Family Life Board of Directors let local Societies nominate a Catholic School to receive a monetary gift. Society No. 31 La Grange, St. Frances of Rome, nominated Sacred Heart Catholic School in La Grange. Schulenburg Police Chief Troy Brenek reports that Officers responded to 63 calls for service between Jan. 30 to Feb.

The Knights of Columbus Fayetteville Council No. 3168 recently made a donation to Sacred Heart Catholic School.

Sacred Heart Catholic School celebrated the community by collecting donations for the Gardenia E. Jansen Animal Shelter for student buy-out of uniforms day. Students know the shelter is always in need supplies and were happy to donate cleaning items, pet toys, and collars, as well as monetary donations.

Sacred Heart School’s sixth grade students treated teachers to breakfast treats Friday morning for teacher appreciation day. It was a wonderful way to end a great Catholic Schools Week..
