Work on New LG Bridge Begins This Week

Boat Ramp on River to Be Closed for 18 Months

The boat ramp under the Travis Street river bridge in La Grange will be closed for at least the next 18 months as contractors build a new bridge across the Colorado River.

La Grange City Manager Shawn Raborn said construction begins Monday, Nov. 9, and will take approximately 430 days to complete.

Texas Department of Transportation has been planning the new bridge for years. Once complete, the new bridge will serve traffic coming into La Grange. The old bridge will convert to one-way and serve outbound traffic.

During construction, however, the popular boat ramp and river access point will be closed to the public.

Back in 2016, the City was awarded a grant to make repairs to the boat ramp. Flooding over the years has chipped away at the bank around the boat ramp and even part of the parking lot under the old bridge. Raborn said the City has been waiting for TxDOT to complete the bridge project before making repairs to the boat ramp.

“The boat ramp will come back after the new bridge is completed,” Raborn said.

In the meantime, the public can still access the Colorado River for kayaking and canoeing at White Rock Park in La Grange. However, there is not other boat ramp within the city. For now, the nearest boat access to the river is at LCRA’s Plum Park, located at the end of Prairie Valley Road near Plum.
