Sons of the Republic Chapter to Reproduce Fence Surrounding San Jacinto Vet Monument

Pin Oak Cemetery, a historic cemetery located in our county between Flatonia and La Grange, just off FM 609, and southwest of the Muldoon turnoff, is the burial grounds of San Jacinto Veteran William Gorham with a State of Texas Historical Marker.

Gorham’s grave site is now surrounded by weakened, rusted away old fence. The Monument Hill Chapter of the Sons of the Republic has respectfully decided to faithfully reproduce the fence work, along with the grave site fences of two other Texas veterans of the Battle of Salado Creek. Dr. John Coppedge, who is doing the reproduction of the fences, said, “On Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021 a rededication ceremony will be held at the cemetery after all the fence work will be done.” A time will be announced at a later date.

Gorham was born in New Haven, Connecticut on March 17, 1798 and came to Texas in 1831, applied for and received one-fourth of a league of land in Austin’s Second Colony. The property was located in what is now Fayette County. Gorham, as a clerk in the War Department, made up the list of the men of the First Regiment of Texas Volunteers who participated in the Battle of San Jacinto.

He was married to Mrs. Lucinda (Kinner) Berry on March 19, 1848. Mr. Gorham died at Black Jack Springs, Fayette County in 1878, and is buried in a marked grave in Pin Oak Cemetery, his wife is also buried there.
