Shots Fired at Carter Motel
Another shooting took place at the Carter Motel last Sunday. It happened two years to the day since another shooting at the apartments left a Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy blind from a shotgun blast.
According to La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath, a La Grange man shot a pistol nine times through the door of his apartment at the Carter Motel last Sunday, Nov. 1. The spray of bullets went across the parking lot. Three of the wild shots entered another room.
Amazingly, no one was injured. The suspect, 22-yearold Logan Earl McKenzie of La Grange, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and felon in possession of a gun. Gilbreath said charges for deadly conduct are pending.
Another person at the Carter Motel called police to report the gunfire around 10:25 p.m. on Nov. 1. Officers Curtis Zwahr, Kevin Currington and Sgt. Travis Anderson responded to the motel, located at 325 Ettinger Road.
Upon arrival, the complainant told officers that someone was shooting a gun and that bullets had entered their room from the door. The shots came from room 12. The officers found one person inside room 12, McKenzie, and determined that he fired the shots through his apartment door. The officers located a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun, nine spent shell casings and some cocaine inside the room.
Gilbreath said McKenzie did not give a reason for the shooting spree when officers arrested him. He was booked into the Dan R. Beck Justice Center without further incident.
The incident happened on the two year anniversary of the Carter Motel shooting that blinded Fayette County Deputy CJ Lehmann. On Nov. 1, 2018, Lehmann was assisting La Grange Police Officers in serving an arrest warrant when the suspect, Shazziz Mateen, allegedly pulled the trigger on a 12-gauge shotgun as Lehmann and other officers broke through the door. Shotgun pellets hit the young officer in the face at close range. The wounds left Lehmann blind in both eyes and ended his career as a patrol deputy. Mateen remains in custody at the Bastrop County Jail awaiting trial.
