Schulenburg Legend Dies From COVID Complications

David Husmann, who coached Schulenburg to back-to-back state titles in 1991 and 1992 died Friday at South Austin Medical Center from complications of COVID-19 his family has confirmed.

Husmann was 67.

His father Edward had been an NFL star in the 1960s and David became a star quarterback and catcher for the University of Houston football and baseball teams in the 1970s before embarking on a storied high school coaching career.

He had a 217-91-1 overall record as a head coach, including 13 years of success in Schulenburg from 1985-98. He then coached eight seasons at Gladewater and five at Weimar, and even won a state title at Weimar as a golf coach in 2011.

In August he came out of retirement to be the head coach at Hallettsville Sacred Heart.

Private graveside services will be held at the Weimar Masonic Cemetery in Weimar, Texas, on Saturday, Dec. 26 at 10 a.m. A Celebration of Coach Husmann’s life will be held at the Schulenburg Shorthorn Stadium in Schulenburg on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 10 a.m.
