Public Hearing On Tax Break Set for Feb. 19

A public hearing over the proposed property tax abatement for the Perdue Farms plant in Schulenburg has been scheduled for Feb. 19.

Representatives from Perdue Farms will be on hand at the hearing to answer questions from the public. According to the company’s tax abatement application, Perdue plans to invest $3.847 million in an expansion to their pet treats processing plant. The company says it intends to hire 28 additional employees as part of the expansion, with wages starting at $15 an hour for production workers. New management hires would earn annual salaries in the $65,000 range.

The application does not say how much abatement the company is requesting.

County Judge Joe Weber instructed county staff to make sure the company’s application and other abatement information would be available for the public to read before the public hearing.
