A Pint of History

A Pint of History
Beer historian Jeremy Banas, right, and the cover of his new book.

Author and beer historian Jeremy Banas will visit Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. for a special presentation and Q&A highlighting his latest book, Lone Star Beer: A History of Two Iconic San Antonio Breweries, published in July.

Banas and staff at Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill will explore the history of Lone Star Beer through the distinct brewing traditions that shaped San Antonio’s cultural and industrial heritage.

Through his research and narrative, Banas examines the ambitions of German brewers, the growth of the brewing industry and the challenges of Prohibition that ultimately helped shape the Lone Star legacy.

The program will also connect that history to Fayette County beer and brewing traditions, including the Kreische Brewery which predates the Lone Star Brewery by at least a decade. After the Kreische Brewery closed, the family retailed Lone Star Beer in downtown La Grange furthering its reach and helping to establish it as the “National Beer of Texas.”

Before the presentation, site staff and volunteers will lead a special evening tour of the Kreische Brewery ruins, highlighting themes and history reflected in Banas’ book. Following the presentation, guests are invited to a reception with light refreshments, where they can meet Banas, ask questions and have books signed. Books will be available for purchase in the sites’ museum store.

The event will also offer an opportunity to support the Friends of Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites. Anyone who joins the Friends group between now and Oct. 20 will be entered into a special raffle, with door prizes announced during the reception. Current members who bring a prospective new member will be entered into a separate raffle.

Memberships help support future programming, preservation efforts and educational events at Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is encouraged.
