No Bluffing – Transformative Work Poised to Begin on Monument Hill

Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites in La Grange will soon get a refreshed look, with the construction of a new visitor center expected to begin in December.

In partnership with Paradigm Construction and Urbano Architects, the visitor center will be built as part of a two-phase capital improvement initiative.

Construction for the second phase of the project, an education and events pavilion that will replace the old restroom building, is scheduled to begin in fall 2027.

“The old A-frame building, originally built as a gift shop and café in the 1960s, then converted into a visitor center and staff offices by Texas Parks and Wildlife in the 1980s, has outlived its essential functions,” says Site Manager Gavin Miculka, “particularly as we’ve expanded public history programs, visitor services, and special events in recent years.”

The improvements are funded through a $4.3 million state appropriation passed by the 88th Texas Legislature in 2023.

Designs for the new visitor center roughly double the square footage of the existing visitor center while remaining mindful of the sites’ uneven topography, trees, and nearby parking areas.

Expanded retail and exhibit space will allow for an increase in merchandise offerings, a showcase of more artifacts from archeological excavations and museum collections, and broader interpretation of both Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill.

The visitor center will also feature additional program storage space, staff offices, and a research library. A multipurpose room will be utilized for interpretive programs and rental meeting space.

The education and events pavilion is expected to have 4,500 square feet of air-conditioned space and over 3,000 square feet of covered terrace, which will replace the sites’ outdated restrooms. It will also feature a catering kitchen, storage space, and a large room for field trips, family interpretive programs, guest lectures, special events, and community rentals.

“For decades, the historic sites have lacked sufficient indoor space for programs and special events,” says Assistant Site Manager Railey Tassin. “Our interpretive programs, field trips, and major events are often subject to cancellation due to rain or extreme weather conditions. We look forward to the greater flexibility allowed by a climatecontrolled event space and extensive covered porches.”

Both facilities incorporate design elements that complement the sites’ historic structures, including the tomb, monument, Kreische House, brewery ruins, and the former Bluff Schuetzenverein pavilion. The design approach will honor the legacy of those who built the sites’ original structures.

The new visitor center is expected to open in September 2027, and the education and events pavilion is expected to be open by summer 2028. The sites will remain open to the public throughout construction. The museum, gift shop, and staff offices will operate out of a temporary building near the parking lot.

While many programs and activities will continue as usual, staff expect some disruption to signature events. Updates will be provided on the sites’ social media channels.
