U.S. President Joe Biden has issued a major disaster declaration for 108 Texas counties following last week’s extreme cold weather, but Fayette County is not included.

Governor Greg Abbott asked Biden for a national disaster declaration for all 254 Texas Counties last week. Biden initially approved the designation for 77 counties. Another 31 were added to the list this Monday.

The federal disaster declaration paves the way for individual financial assistance to citizens who suffered losses in the historic winter storm.

Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau said he believes Fayette County will eventually be included.

“I think all counties in Texas will be added, with the possible exception of El Paso County, be cause they did not lose power,” Moreau said.

Moreau asked Fayette County residents to fill out a winter storm damage survey that is being conducted by the Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM).

“The survey is very important for people to fill out,” Moreau said. “The information will be used to determine how much individual aid people will get. The more people do it, the better our chances are.”

The only way to access the survey is by scanning a QR code with a smartphone or by going to a web address that is too long and complicated to even print in this newspaper. (We have shortened here: https://tinyurl.com/2w2wjuj9.) The website listed in the graphic provided by TDEM will not take you to the survey.

Most smartphones include software that can read QR codes.

To access the survey, open your phone’s camera app and point the camera at the QR code printed on this page. The phone should provide you a prompt to access the survey.

Moreau questioned the state’s decision to use QR codes for the public to access the survey.

“They really want you to use the QR code but some people aren’t familiar with it,” Moreau said. “I don’t know if that’s the greatest way to do things when you have people of different generations.”
