Brisk Early Voting Turnout Here So Far

More than 12 percent of all registered voters in Fayette County have already cast a ballot for the Nov. 3 general election.

Fayette County Elections Administrator Terri Hefner reported that 725 people voted by mail and another 765 cast ballots on the first day of inperson early voting, which was Tuesday, Oct. 13.

On Wednesday, Hefner reported another 676 people voted.

That amounts to 2,166 ballots already cast. There are 17,406 registered voters in Fayette County.

“We’re busy, but everything is going pretty smoothly,” Hefner said.

Hefner said a few voters who requested and received mail-in ballots decided to vote in-person instead of mailing in their ballots. In those cases, she said the voter must first surrender their mail-in ballot to the elections office before they can vote in-person. She wished to remind voters to bring along their mail-in ballot if they decide to vote in-person at the courthouse.

In addition, Hefner wished to remind the public about electioneering laws which prohibit campaign messages, including t-shirts, hats, and pins, from within 100 feet of a polling location. She said a few people have shown up wearing those items.

“You can’t wear that attire when you come to vote,” Hefner said. “Those kinds of things can lead to tempers flaring, and we haven’t had any of that happen, but it helps us to avoid those kinds of things.”
