Brenham Police Officer Injured After Traffic Stop

• A Brenham Police officer sustained minor injuries and a suspect was taken to a local hospital after an Oct. 7 earlymorning confrontation. Just after midnight, police made a traffic stop in the 100 block of East Val Verde St. Officer Armando Guerra attempted to detain the driver, who he says was uncooperative and exhibiting signs of intoxication. Guerra says the suspect, whose name is not being released by police, struck him in the face before attempting to flee. The two then reportedly fell to the ground with the suspect striking his head on the concrete. EMS transported the man to Scott & White Hospital for evaluation, while Officer Guerra was treated for minor injuries. Charges are currently pending.

• The leader received confirmation from Superintendent Dr. Tonya Knowlton that counterfeit tickets had been sold at one of the Eagle home football games. Knowlton said, “We had 40-50 fake tickets sold to a recent home game. We were so disappointed in the fact that someone would do this and we have taken extra precautions for future games. Our new tickets have security elements built-in.”

• A former Somerville coach was killed on Oct. 5 on Highway 36 between Brenham and Somerville. DPS said a Chevy Equinox driven by Michael David Myers, 51, was driving behind a Volvo pulling a trailer. As the Volvo prepared to turn right, the Chevy crashed into the back of the trailer. DPS said Myers was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Volvo was not injured in the crash.

• After months of public information requests and social media posts, a group of citizens brought complaints and allegations against city officials regarding the police department during last week’s Elgin City Council meeting. The public comment portion of last Tuesday’s meeting began with the reading of a statement sent in by 21 people. The statement expressed support for the Concerned Citizens of Elgin, a group that has been requesting and gathering documents through public information requests and asked the council for an external investigation of Police Chief Patrick South and City Manager Thomas Mattis. Later in the week, after the city council meeting, the City of Elgin released a statement from the council, saying they have reviewed and considered the input from citizens and they stand behind South and Mattis.
