American Academy of Dermatology Awards $8,000 Grant to La Grange Noon Lions Club

La Grange Noon Lions Club received an $8,000 grant from the American Academy of Dermatology’s Shade Structure Grant Program. In partnership with the City of La Grange and other funding sources, the Noon Lions used this grant to help fund the recently completed construction of the shade structure over the playground at the Fayette Public Library.

“We want the playground to be accessible to children year round, but even touching the equipment on our hottest days can leave a burn,” said Ken Morris, Noon Lions Club representative. “This shade canopy will help prevent first and second degree burns and protest children from the damaging effects of the sun.” According to the AAD, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and it only takes one blistering sunburn during childhood to nearly double a person’s chance of developing the deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma, later in life.

The Shade Structure Grant Program is part of the AAD’s SPOT Skin Cancer campaign to reduce the risk of childhood skin cancer and educate the pubic about effective skin cancer prevention measures.
