Team Winchester will again be participating in the Bike MS: Texas MS 150 on May 1. This year the ride is a one-day event with varying riding distances from 70-100 miles based on the starting points used.

Team Winchester, consisting of Amanda Hart and Tom Atkins, will depart from La Grange and proceed 80 miles to Kyle Field in College Station. Each rider pays a registration fee of $125 and is required to raise at least $400 in donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society which is used for research and patient care.

If you would like to donate you may contact either of the riders or donate directly to the Multiple Sclerosis Society through their website’s donation page, Bike MS: Texas 150 2021 and click on team donation Winchester.

WACA 2021 Scholarship

This year the Winchester Area Civic Association will be offering a $1,000 scholarship to a person enrolled or enrolling in an institute of higher learning for careers in the professions of nursing, teaching, criminology/ peace officer, fire sciences, dental, radiology/imaging or EMT certification/paramedic degree.

To qualify you must be a resident of Fayette County and enrolled in college or an approved program by the fall of 2021 or been enrolled for at least one semester. You must have a GPA of 2.5.

Neighbor’s Night Out

After a long hiatus due to COVID-19, Neighbor’s Night Out will begin again on May 12 at the home of Wayne and Ellen Brumback at 401 Piney Grove Lane.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring a potluck dish to share and a lawn chair. Please come, meet, and visit with your neighbors.

Mother’s Day BBQ Chickens

Mother’s Day chickens will be sold on May 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. They must be pre-ordered. An order form is available in the narthex of the St. Michael’s Lutheran Church or you can text Jake Franke at (979) 966-7416. Chickens will sell for $10 and BBQ sauce for $2. Orders will be taken until May 2.

Young at Heart

Young at Heart will begin meeting again on Tuesday afternoon, May 11 at 2 p.m. at Zilss Hall. Please come and have an afternoon of dominoes or cards with your neighbors. Bring a lunch dish to share with the participants. Drinks will be provided.

Quilt Block Class

A Quilt Block Paint Class will be held on Saturday, May 15 at 10 a.m. at Zilss Hall in Winchester.

Registration is required and can be completed on-line at www.quiltblocktrail.com. A $65 registration fee may be sent to WACA at 8945 FM 153, Winchester, Texas 78945. The registration fee has been raised due to the higher cost of lumber and paint. If you would prefer to pay with a credit card you may contact Rhoda Gersch at (979) 242- 3213.

The class will be 6 hours long and you will be able to complete a quilt block. All supplies will be provided. Please wear appropriate clothing that could be stained with paint, also bring a sack lunch and drinks. COVID-19 protocols will be observed.

Wildflowers and Quilt Trail

The bluebonnets and other amazing wildflowers are blooming along the quilt block trail in Winchester. Quilt Trail maps can be picked up at the Texas Quilt Museum, Casino Hall, the Wendish Museum, quilt stores, and other businesses in Giddings, Smithville, and La Grange.

The trail is self-drive, is available at your convenience and is a great way to spend an afternoon viewing the wildflowers and the beautiful quilt blocks on fences, gates, barns, and houses that can be seen from the road.

Recycling Trailer

The Winchester recycling trailer is located on the side of Zilss Hall on Memorial Hall Street. Please place your recycling in the appropriate bins.

We would appreciate that you make sure that you close the bins so that any trash will remain in the bins and not blow.

Reminder: these bins are not for household garbage. Recycled items only please.

Zilss Community Hall

Anyone wishing to rent Zilss Hall should contact (512) 434-0292. The hall is following COVID-19 requirements. Rent is very reasonable.

The Little Free Library

The library is always open and has a variety of authors. Space is limited, so please, if you donate a book(s), look through the current selection and take as many as you leave.

The Little Free Library is housed under the roof of the patio at Zilss Hall. There is also a bulletin board available on the patio. If you have an event, you would like advertised, please post.

St. Michael’s Lutheran Church

Continuing for all future worship services unless notified otherwise, St Michael’s will be changing the format of their worship services as they continue to adapt to COVID-19.

The new worship format will allow those who are comfortable returning to worship service in the sanctuary to do so while still making accommodations for those who would prefer to participate from their vehicles in the parking lot. The wearing of a mask or face covering is also required at this time for those participating in the sanctuary. Every other pew will be marked off to allow spacing between groups.

First United Methodist

The Winchester First United Methodist Church has returned to service inside the sanctuary. Please wear a mask and social distance inside the church. The church has services on the first and third Sunday of the month at 8:30 a.m. The Rev Patricia Zaiontz-Newcomer is the pastor.

Shiloh Baptist Church
