8th Annual Monster Dash Was Spooky Fun

The organizers of the 8th Annual Monster Dash were excited to welcome perfect weather and a spooktacular crowd for their event on Saturday, October 24, at Jack & Mary’s in Schulenburg.

The event was kicked off with the Halloween Themed Bake-off which scared up some yummy entries. The winners included: Tastiest – Kyle Janda with his “Tres Leches Cake”, Most Creative - Emily Wied with her “Tombstone Cupcakes”, and Best In Show – Candace Berger with her “Cemetery Dirt”. The longest standing tradition of the Monster Dash is the Jack Hooper Halloween Costume Contest.

The winners were selected by judges this year and were: Best Homemade – Samantha Goldman as a 50’s girl (her outfit was actually made 32 years ago!); Best Group – the Guentert children as Elsa, Anna and Olaf; Scariest – Rylen Lopez as a zombie; Funniest/Silliest – Addison Romine as a lifeguard; Cutest – June Schiffli as a pineapple; Best Duo - Bryson & Savannah Dees as mummies, and, Best 5-minute Throw Together – Benjamin Garlick as Spiderboy.

The evening was packed full with spooky Boo Around the Block stations, silent auction thanks to the generosity of numerous donors, food by the Happy Camper and dance performances by On Pointe dancers. The actual Monster “Dash” was held to see who was the fastest in town. The winners of this event included: Pre K/ Kinder - Tripp Brown, Elementary - Rilee Kusy, Jr. High - Barrett Brock, High School - Will Hooper, Adult - Cara Bartek.

Proceeds from the Monster Dash benefited Turtle Wing Foundation which strives to help children with learning challenges in rural areas achieve their full potential. Program participants are all from Colorado, Fayette, Lavaca and surrounding counties with academic, socialemotional, behavioral and/or developmental needs.
