As I sit in my cocoon of spring weather, surrounded by beautiful flowers and in touch with friends I am shaken from my comfort by images of snow, bombed buildings, desperate women and children fleeing from the ravages of war, and men street fighting for their country.

A bill calling for the creation of Texas Canyons State Park was introduced in the Lone Star legislature on Mar. 2, 1933, but national status for Big Bend would be a long time coming.

They open up the entire world to a beginner. They instruct and guide children all the way through elementary, middle school, high school and college. There are clubs, libraries, stores, websites devoted to them. They are spiritual, informative, suspenseful and intriguing. Books have been with us for centuries.

I knew Dr. Bill Nolen for over 40 years in many capacities; first, as a new nurse who knew very little, but thought she knew everything. He was a great teacher - he forgot more than most doctors will ever know. He was a constant learner, always sharing articles from The New England Journal of Medicine and other medical journals. He stayed up to date on everything, even COVID.
