Winners and Losers
To the editor:
There have been numerous articles about data centers and how they have the ability to use vast amounts of electricity and cooling water. Our civic leaders need to get beyond the possibility of employment opportunities and tax dollars needed for city and county coffers. Each proposed data center needs to be totally self-sufficient and does not impact the community in any way.
I’m trying to understand the need for so many data centers? As most people would like to know, exactly what are each of these data centers going to be used for? How much revenue can the individual governments expect to gain, monetarily, from these data centers?
I for one see these data centers go the way of the dot com era of the 1990s. Each of the data centers have to make money to support building them. At what point does the building a data center actually make sense? Every time a data center is built it dilutes all the data centers to ultimately make each one a losing proposition. At some point they become white elephants and will be abandoned.
It seems like all of the big businesses try to outdo each other with a data center. In the end there will be losers and winners. Only time will tell when our governments wake up and see that there is only so much room for these data centers.
