Our Friends in Fear

To the editor:

On June 23, 2026, the unthinkable occurred. ICE rolled into Fayette County arriving in Black SUVs with darkened windows. They brought uncertainty and fear. They set up patrols on Highways 71 & 77. They stopped and arrested some folks.

We tried to find out who and why but couldn’t get the answers we wanted. Our friends and neighbors, workers who help us every day hunkered down with fear and dread of being arrested. Of course, if any persons have committed a vicious crime, they should be jailed, but those who have followed the call on our Statue of Liberty, “Give us your tired, your poor, the huddled masses yearning to be free,” deserve their chance that is promised by our free and Democratic nation.
