ICE’s Visit to La Grange

To the editor:

This week the front page of the Record this week has been dominated by articles concerning local ICE and Sheriff’s Office activities.

The first article dealt with the detention of a local mechanic by the Sheriff’s Office for driving with a license plate on the dash and an uncovered trailer. As reported the Sheriff’s deputy was told by immigration that the man had no legal issues, but still he was arrested and is still detained. I wonder how many Caucasians have been treated the same way by the deputy.

Then on the first page of the Record on June 26 an article dealt with claims that ICE was knocking on doors in a sting operation. The Record reported that the Commissioners’ Court had agreed that the Sheriff’s department could partner with Operation Lone Star because it could result in grant funds for the department. Do we really need the money that badly?

Lastly, a real service to your readership community would be an article on what are ICE’s rights to stop a law-abiding driver, what can ICE ask you and what if anything you are required to say, what documents can ICE require a person to show them and what if anything do you have to do if ICE comes knocking on your door?
