Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15-October 15 is recognized as Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. The purpose of the month is to observe and recognize the contributions made by all Hispanic and Latine peoples within the United States. In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson established the National Hispanic Heritage Week, which took place in the week of the 15 of September, and in 1988, the week was expanded to a month by President Ronald Reagan. The stretch of time Hispanic Heritage takes place within also marks the independence of many nations such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile, and Mexico. It is important to observe and recognize the work and achievements made by the Hispanic community in our everyday lives. Especially now, more than ever, it is important to observe this month, as most of the once-proud Hispanic community is under attack and in danger. It is important to reflect on the contributions made by this community every day and to fight for their rights; whether they are “legal” or “illegal” shouldn’t matter when they are contributing so much to this country. The Hispanic community makes up a part of the Fayette County community, which is made up of so many different people, so stand for your neighbors the way they’d stand for you.
