Tidwell’s Experience and Youthful Hustle of Lady Horns Becoming a Successful Mix
The Schulenburg girls basketball players are really young, and their new coach is really experienced.
And that’s proving to be a great combination.
The Lady Horns smashed Bloomington 68-19 Tuesday to improve to 14-8 overall and 3-2 in district.
That’s a far cry from last season when the Lady Horns went just 6-29 prior to Tidwell’s arrival.
“We’re young ... but our kids hustle,” said coach Larry Tidwell, a Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, who is in his 49th year coaching and second stint at Schulenburg after a storied career that included several stellar seasons as a head coach at the college level. “We start two freshman (Miranda Bonner and Jenna Guentert), two sophomores (Arianna Vincent and Jashiya Jackson) and a junior (Alana Herzik) and See most of the kids that are coming off the bench are freshman and sophomores.”
“But we’re right on the verge of having a winning season,” Tidwell said. “We definitely want to make the playoffs. That would be a step in the right direction for this program.”
The Lady Horns only have one senior, Emmrie Marx.
“But she’s as good a kid as I’ve ever been around in my 49 years of coaching.” Tidwell said. “She adds something to our team everyday. She’s such a leader.”
Tuesday the Lady Horns were led in scoring by sophomore Jackson, who had 16 points and freshman Bonner, who had 14 points.
Game by game, Tidwell seems to be building a new legacy with these young Lady Horns, who are benefitting from his experience.
“Since I’ve been back, I’m seeing a lot of former friends and now coaching their kids,” Tidwell said. “I’ll tell the kids something and their parents are like, ‘Yeah, he told me that, too.’”
